Blue Badges

Blue badges are to help people who have a disability or hidden disability to make it easier for them to travel. Find out if you're eligible and apply or renew here.

People who automatically get a Blue Badge

You automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if you are aged 3 or over and at least one of the following applies:

People who automatically get a Blue Badge

High rate of the mobility component of Disability living allowance (DLA)

If you receive the higher rate of the mobility component of  Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

You will need to provide your latest DLA award letter dated within the last 12 months. If you letter is over 12 months old, you will need to call and ask for an up-to-date letter.

If you were born before 8 April 1948, then number to call is 0800 731 0122.

If you were born after 8 April 1948, the number to call is 0800 121 4600.

If you receive Attendance Allowance you do not automatically qualify. Find out how you may be eligible here.

Personal independence payment (PIP)

You will need your latest PIP award letter showing the points awarded in the relevant section and the start and end date of your award, to show how long the award has been issued for.

If you do not have your award letter, the number to call is 0800 121 4433

To qualify you must:

  • have been awarded 8 points or more for the 'moving around' activity of the mobility component

b. Can stand and then move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 4
c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8
d. Can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 10
e. Can stand and then move more than 1 metre but no more than 20 metres, either aided or unaided. 12

f. Cannot, either aided or unaided -

i. stand; or
ii. move more than 1 metre

•    have been awarded 10 points for planning and following journeys activity for descriptor E only, which states - Cannot undertake any journey because it would cause overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant as below.

e. Cannot undertake any journey because it would cause overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant. 10
f. Cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid. 12

Please note - if you have been awarded points for any other descriptor in the planning and following a journey activity, this is not automatic eligibility, even if you have been awarded 10 points or more.

When we process your Blue Badge application, we will check your Personal Independence Payment Award with the Department of Work and Pensions.

If our check confirms you receive the qualifying points you will not need to send us any proof of your PIP award. If we are unable to confirm your points, we will contact you to request your award letter.

Registered as severely sight-impaired (blind)

If you are Registered Severely Sight Impaired (Blind).

You must provide a copy of one of the following:

  • Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), stating you are severely sight impaired (blind)
  • Ophthalmologists report

If you are registered sight impaired (partially sighted), you do not automatically qualify. Find out how you may be eligible here.
 

War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement

If you receive the War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement.

You will need to provide your War Pensioner's entitlement letter stating that you receive the Mobility Supplement. If you do not have a letter, you will need to call Veterans UK and ask for a letter to be sent to you.

Armed Forces and Reserve Forces Compensation Scheme

You receive the Armed Forces and Reserve Forces Compensation Scheme.

If you have received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels 1-8 of the armed forces and reserved forces compensation scheme and have been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability which causes inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking.

You will need to provide your full award letter which confirms this. If you do not have a letter, you will need to call Veterans UK and ask for a letter to be sent to you.
