The Mayor of Knowsley

Each year, the elected members of the council choose a mayor for the coming year. The Mayor represents Knowsley at public events and ceremonies as well as civic events in other towns, cities and countries.

Guidance for Mayoral events

The Worshipful the Mayor shall have precedence within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley subject only to the presence of His Majesty the King or a representative of His Majesty, including the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff.

The Mayor’s Arrival

  • The responsible person at any event should meet the Mayor at the entrance on arrival and should introduce him to the host or to the assembled company.

Greeting the Mayor

  • When greeting the Mayor, he should be welcomed with a handshake and addressed as ‘Mr Mayor.’

Where the Mayor Should be Seated

  • Unless the Mayor occupies the Chair, he should be seated on the immediate right of the person presiding.

Announcing the Mayor

  • When the Mayor is formally announced, those present will be asked to stand.

Speeches

  • Except for an introduction, unless otherwise agreed, it is usual practice that the Mayor should be the first speaker.
