Listed buildings are special buildings that have been identified as being of national importance due to their architectural or historic interest. Knowsley has over 100 listed buildings, including one Grade I building, four Grade II* buildings, and the remainder listed at Grade II.

Buildings of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important.
Grade II:*
Particularly important buildings of more than special interest.

Nationally important and of special interest.
Consent for work on listed buildings
You must get consent from the council before carrying out any work that affects the special interest of a listed building. This includes restorations, alterations, demolitions, and extensions. The requirement for consent also applies to internal works and works affecting outbuildings and other structures associated with the principal listed building.
Penalties for unauthorised work
Undertaking work to a listed building that affects its special interest without first gaining Listed Building Consent is a criminal offence. If you are in any doubt whether you require consent for works, you should contact Planning Services at 0151 443 2380 for advice.
Maintenance of listed buildings
If you own a listed building, you are responsible for its maintenance. Failure to maintain a listed building in an acceptable condition may result in the council using its enforcement powers to ensure the building is preserved.

Protection offered by listing
Listing grants a building legal protection from demolition or alterations that could compromise its significance as a structure of architectural or historical importance. This protection covers both the exterior and interior of the building, as well as any fixtures or structures attached to it or within its curtilage.
Listed building consent requirements
Listed Building Consent (LBC) is mandated for any works, including demolition, alteration, or extension to a listed building, that might jeopardise its architectural or historical significance. This includes changes to the building's interior and works that affect the building's surroundings.
Applying for listing
Any individual can propose that a building be listed, and applications should be submitted to Historic England. They will then evaluate the request and recommend to the Secretary of State whether the building should be listed. Application
If you're unsure whether your proposed changes to a listed building will be approved, you can seek informal advice by submitting a Pre-application request for advice. A fee is applicable for this service.
Applications for Listed Building Consent must include a Heritage Statement and a Design and Access Statement, which can be combined into a single document.
Applications for Planning Permission, where the work may affect the setting of a listed building, must also include a Heritage Statement. A Design and Access Statement may also be required in some cases, and it can be combined with the Heritage Statement.
