Apply for in-year school admission

Find out how to apply for in-year admission to a Knowsley primary or secondary school.

Overview

In-year school admission refers to a request for a place at a school at any time other than the typical point of entry to reception class in primary school or year 7 in secondary school, and is sometimes known as a school transfer. This guide will explain how to apply for in-year admission to Knowsley schools.

Common reasons why an in-year admission application may be made:

  • You are moving to a new address in the area, and your child cannot continue attending their current school due to travel distance/time.
  • Your child is currently in an independent (private) school, or you elected to home-educate, but you now want them to attend a Knowsley school.
  • Other reasons why you no longer want your child to continue to attend their current school.

Things to remember:

  • There is no guarantee that a place will be available in your school/s of preference or that siblings will be offered places in the same school.
  • Once you have made a formal request by completing an in-year application, you should expect to receive an outcome within 15 school days.
  • In-year applications are not typically processed during school holiday periods when schools are closed.
  • If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), you should contact the Special Education Needs Service in the Local Authority in which you live to discuss changing schools, as different procedures apply.
  • To apply for in-year admission to a school in another local authority area, you will need to follow the procedures of that local authority, as the process is not coordinated across local authorities.
