About listed buildings
Listed buildings have national importance due to their special architectural or historic interest. Knowsley has over 100 listed buildings, including one Grade I building, four Grade II* buildings, and the remainder listed at Grade II.
The grading (I, II* or II) highlights their relative level of importance in a national context, however it is not an indication of the extent to which alterations may be allowed.
| Grade I | Buildings of exceptional special interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important. |
| Grade II* | Particularly important buildings of more than special interest. |
| Grade II | Buildings of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them. |
Listed Buildings are chosen for their special architectural or historic interest.
Anyone can apply for a building to be listed. Applications should be made to Historic England. They assess and make recommendations to the Secretary of State over individual applications. For further information as to the process, and the criteria which will apply please see Apply for Listing | Historic England.
