Extent of protection offered by listing
Across all grades of buildings, when a building is listed, it is listed in its entirety, which means that both the exterior and the interior are protected. In addition, any object or structure fixed to the building, and any object or structure within the curtilage of the building, which although not fixed to the building, forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948, is treated as part of the listed building.
The list description is only for the purposes of identifying the principal listed building. If a specific feature (e.g. an outbuilding, wall, or internal detail) is not mentioned, this does not mean that it is not protected. While more recent list descriptions include greater information about the features, history and significance of buildings, the majority of list descriptions of buildings in Knowsley were written before these changes were introduced.
If you own a listed building, you are responsible for its maintenance. Failure to maintain a listed building in an acceptable condition may result in the council using its enforcement powers to ensure the building is preserved.
