About free school meals

Free school meals provide nutritious lunch options to support your child's learning and well-being.

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, they can receive free school meals regardless of household income, without needing to apply.

For children in other year groups, your child or children may be eligible for free school meals if you receive certain benefits.

Who is eligible for free school meals

Your child may be eligible for free school meals if you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • An income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit with an annual income of £16,190 or less (but not if you are in work and receive Working Tax Credit)
  • The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Universal Credit, provided you have an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 a month)
