As part of the Higher Road Active Travel and Safety Scheme, we are delivering initiatives to encourage active travel options within the area and reduce reliance on motor vehicles, promoting healthier travel choices. We are proposing to connect the Higher Road scheme with National Cycling Route 62, which runs via Halewood Triangle and along Blackburne Drive. To support this connection, a dedicated highway safety scheme has been developed to improve access to this strategic cycling corridor.
To improve direct connection links to the National Cycle Network and integrate with the new active travel route along Higher Road, we are proposing to relocate the existing crossing point on Higher Road approximately 30m south of its existing position and upgrade it to a toucan crossing to allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely together.
The new location will be directly on the NCR 62 and provide a more direct link, bringing both routes together. The section of Blackburne Drive between Higher Road and Boundary Drive will become one-way, allowing access from Higher Road to Boundary Drive, and vehicles will no longer be able to exit Blackburne Drive onto Higher Road at this junction. As part of the scheme, a short section of segregated cycle path will also be constructed along Blackburne Drive by widening the existing footway. This stretch of carriageway will be reduced to a single lane with a give-way junction formed at Boundary Drive.
Below is a download which shows the location of the proposed measures. The location of the cycleway has been designed to ensure that cyclists can access the National Cycle Route without requiring a further crossing point at the junction of Boundary Drive, whilst not interfering with access to individual driveways, as these will be included in the design.
