The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed £7.3 billion of long-term funding for local highway maintenance across England for the period 2026/27 to 2029/30. The funding is intended to support local highway authorities in adopting a more strategic and preventative approach to maintenance, helping to improve the long-term condition, safety and resilience of the local road network.
To ensure that this investment delivers tangible benefits for residents, businesses and road users, the DfT has introduced enhanced transparency and performance reporting requirements. First implemented in 2025/26, these measures include annual reporting, annually updated ratings and incentive-based funding arrangements.
As part of these requirements, local highway authorities are required to publish information on their highway maintenance activities, providing greater transparency on how public funding is being invested and the outcomes being achieved.
Knowsley Council received an additional £1,010,708 of highway maintenance funding in 2025/26 and will receive a further £976,636 in 2026/27. This funding is not just for fixing potholes, but for resurfacing roads and cycleways, repairing broken pavements, maintaining bridges, tunnels, retaining walls and other structures.
