Proposed signalised crossings - Wood Road, Halewood

Find out about the proposed signalised crossings at Wood Road, Halewood and how to have your say.

The proposed toucan crossings are required to provide safe and convenient crossing facilities for both pedestrians and cyclists and to support the wider active travel improvements being delivered within the Halewood area.

A toucan crossing is a signal-controlled crossing that can be used by both pedestrians and cyclists allowing cyclists to cross without dismounting and providing a safer and more accessible route for active travel users.

It is proposed to install the toucan crossings at the following locations:

  • Wood Road, Halewood – From a point 15m west of its junction with The Avenue for a distance 60m in a westerly direction.
  • Wood Road, Halewood – From a point 17m east of its junction with Pendleton Green for a distance of 47m in an easterly direction.

The exact locations can be viewed on the location plan below.

The toucan crossing on The Avenue is located close to Yew Tree Primary School and Halewood Academy where pedestrian activity is particularly high during peak school periods. This crossing will provide a controlled facility for pupils, cyclists and other users improving safety and accessibility and supporting safer journeys to and from school.

The toucan crossing on Wood Road has been designed to tie in with the proposed Grace Park development and improvements nearby the Pendleton Green enhancing connectivity between residential areas, schools, community facilities and other key destinations. Together, the crossings will improve accessibility, reduce severance caused by traffic movements, increase driver awareness of pedestrian and cyclist activity and provide safer crossing opportunities for vulnerable road users.

In conjunction with the proposed segregated cycle facilities and parking restrictions, the toucan crossings will contribute to a coherent and connected active travel network, encouraging walking and cycling whilst improving overall road safety  and helping to deliver safer, more sustainable travel choices for the local community.
