What can I recycle?

The label on the packaging says its recyclable. Why can’t I recycle it in my recycling bin?

Recycling symbols are printed on packaging by the manufacturer. These show that the material could possibly be recycled but only if there are suitable local facilities to process the material.

Why is our team needed?

We are here to make recycling simpler and clearer for everyone in the community.  Visit our Meet the Recycling Team page for more information about what we do! The current recycling rate in Knowsley is 28.5%. The national average is 44%. The government have also set a target of 65% by 2035. This means that we have a way to go!

Why is recycling important?

Recycling keeps valuable materials like paper, plastics, and metals in use, supporting a circular economy. In Knowsley, recycling correctly means less contamination, which ensures more materials can be recycled rather than wasted.

Where does our recycling go?

What happens if I put the wrong things in my recycling bin?

If you put the wrong items in your recycling bin the crew should not empty your bin until you’ve taken the wrong items out. This is because non-recyclable items can spoil the rest of the recyclables and mean a whole load may need to be disposed of.

In the Liverpool City Region, 27% of the recycling we collect is contaminated, so it is very important to check your waste before putting it in the grey bin.

Do lids and labels have to be taken off glass and plastic bottles and tins before being recycled?

Labels can be removed but it’s not essential. Lids should be kept on glass and plastic bottles.

Should I put my recycling in a carrier bag/bin bag?

Please keep your recycling clean and loose in the bin. If items are inside plastic bags or black sacks, they can’t be sorted by the machines and will end up as general waste.

What is Simpler Recycling?

Simpler Recycling is UK government initiative that aims to standardise waste and recycling collections to improve consistency and increase recycling rates. This involves standardising materials collected across all local authorities making collections simpler. By 2026 key changes include weekly food waste collections.

Will the crew take extra recycling?

No, if you have extra recycling on a regular basis, residents can order a free 2nd grey bin.
