About Stadt Moers Park

Named after Huyton’s twin town, Stadt Moers in Germany, the park borders the communities of Huyton, Whiston and Prescot.  It has a diverse history – formerly used for farming, but most notably for mining and quarrying and then as a landfill site.

In the early 1980s the site was converted to public open space through a major reclamation initiative delivered under Operation Groundwork, resulting in the current park space that is present today.

A layout plan of the park can be viewed here.

The park borders the communities of Huyton, Whiston and Prescot as well as being nearby Whiston, Huyton and Prescot train stations, with access to key bus services.  The park has close transport links with the M57 and the M62, lying just north of Tarbock Island interchange.

Stadt Moers is essentially four parks in one, the east and west sections being split by the M57, and the Liverpool to Manchester rail line and Pottery Lane splitting the north and south sections.  Known as “quadrants”, these are named Pluckington (north west), Pottery Fields (north east), West View (south west) and Tushingham (south east).

This plan shows the quadrants making up the Park.

Within these four “quadrants” lie extensive woodland and meadowland habitats, as well as ponds, wetlands and watercourses.  The park also contains large areas for public use, as well as play facilities and a fitness trail.  Over 6.5km of paths provide extensive walking, cycling and other recreational and exercise opportunities.

Why we need your views

The Council is keen to understand how local residents bordering Stadt Moers Park, as well as the wider Knowsley community, would like to see the park developed to provide a better park for the Borough.  It is essential that the proposals for the park are shaped by the local residents it is there to serve.

We want to understand initially your current use and views of the park, as well as the physical improvements and development of activities/events/services that the park should deliver in the future to meet the needs of the Knowsley Community.

This consultation will lead to the development of a Master Plan for the park.  We will collect your views and come back with further proposals for you to comment on when we have reviewed the initial aspirations for the park that the community has.
