Creating a modern community space at the heart of Huyton

Creating a modern community space at the heart of Huyton

As part of Knowsley Council's ongoing regeneration of Huyton Village Centre, we are creating a vibrant new library with community offer within the former B&M unit on Cavendish Walk.

Our vision is to provide a welcoming, accessible and inclusive space where people of all ages can learn, connect, develop new skills and access support services. The new facility will bring together a modern library, community activities, digital services, employment and training support, and flexible spaces for events and learning, creating a destination that meets the needs of residents now and into the future.

By relocating the library into the heart of the high street, we will bring a prominent vacant building back into use, increase activity and footfall within the town centre, support local businesses, and contribute to a more vibrant and thriving Huyton.

The new library will continue to provide the trusted services residents value today, including access to books, computers, printing, online support and community activities, while offering exciting new spaces for children, young people and adults to learn, create and connect. The new library will also be fully accessible and include a changing places facility right on the high street.

Together, we are creating more than a library. We are creating a community-focused destination that will support learning, wellbeing, employment and opportunity while helping to shape the future of Huyton.

Huyton Library relocation FAQs

Why is Huyton Library moving?

The move forms part of wider town centre regeneration and investment plans. The new library will become a High Street anchor and provide extra footfall to Huyton Village. The new location will provide a modern, accessible and flexible library space that better meets the needs of residents, visitors and community groups.

Where will the new library be located?

The new library will be located at the currently vacant former B&M unit at 5-8 Cavendish Walk, Huyton, Liverpool L36 9YG.

Will the library remain open during the move?

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption. Any temporary closure periods required to complete the move will be communicated in advance. If required, this is likely to be no more than a few days.

Will library services change?

Core library services will continue to be available. The new facility is expected to provide opportunities for enhanced services, events, activities, and community use. Don't worry if there is a particular event that you currently attend, as these will continue in the new location. If there are other activities you would like to see, please let us know.

Will there be computers and public Wi‑Fi?

Yes. Public access computers, Wi‑Fi and digital services will remain available within the new library. There will also be scanning devices and VR headsets. You will also be able to plug in your own devices as power points will be available. Digital buddies will be available to support your digital needs.

Will the new library be accessible?

Accessibility is a key consideration within the design. The new facility will be accessible to all abilities and inclusive facilities for all users. It will also include accessible toilets, and a Changing Places -facility.

Will opening hours change?

Initial opening hours will remain Mon-Fri 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-1pm. We are also working with partners to consider potential options for evening youth activities.

How will current groups be affected?

The Council will work with existing users and community groups to ensure continued access to library facilities and activities.

What will happen with the current library building?

When the library relocates to its new home, the existing library building will be utilised as a temporary office to accommodate council staff until the new council headquarters are constructed.  Whilst the new headquarters are under construction, the Council will market the existing library building and will look to repurpose it for appropriate uses subject to market demand.

How is the project being funded?

The project is being funded through external funding secured by the Council from Homes England’s Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land (BIL) fund.  Homes England is providing £19m funding in total for the enabling works, demolition, infrastructure works and for Cavendish Walk.

Will we be able to borrow books in the same way I do now and will there be the same number of books?

Yes, you can borrow and return books from the library by accessing the self-service machines or if preferred with a member of staff. Access to eBooks remains available as does our Home Delivery service, so access to books is as good as ever. We will also be purchasing a range of new books to offer, and we will not be reducing our stock. There will be no fines on late returns, so please do come along, bring any expired books back and browse the exciting new offer.

Will there continue to be a dedicated Children's library?

Yes, there will be a dedicated children’s area which will include resources and activities. This will be enjoyed by children of all ages, school trips, performances and plenty of crafts, singing and fun.

When will the new library open?

The new library will open in Spring 2027, so not too long to wait. If passing by, you will see work has already started.

What consultation is taking place and how do I give feedback?

Consultation will take place from 17 August 2026 for a 4-week period. This will take place in the Huyton library, schools, and online. We welcome your ideas and thoughts from all ages.

Will the new building remain a warm hub with free hot drinks available during winter?

Yes, we will still provide hot drinks and a warm space for all customers during the winter months, with lots of seating to sit and enjoy a good book or join in one of our adult activities.

Where can I park if I want to use the new library and is it free?

The Council will ensure that whilst work is carried out sufficient car parking is maintained. Any impact to car parking will be made on a phased basis. For the first phase of demolition, the car parks in the immediate area (opposite Nutgrove Villa where the NHS walk-in Centre is), opposite Huyton Library and the Archway Road car park will not be affected. In addition, for this initial phase, the multi-storey car park and Huyton Hey car park also remain unaffected. Any changes to parking arrangements will be shared in advance along with signage to direct users to the nearest car parks.

All Council-owned car parks in Huyton remain free of charge to use. Restrictions on short stay (up to 3 hours) parking bays remain enforced.

As part of the wider programme, the council will construct a new sustainable travel hub on the current site of the Lathom Road multi storey car park with increased capacity.
