Activities that require an animal license

  • Dog breeding
  • Dog boarding in kennels and home boarding of dogs
  • Dog day care
  • Cat boarding
  • Selling animals as pets
  • Exhibition of animals
  • Hiring out horses

The following animal licenses are largely unaffected by the new regulations:

  • Zoo licensing
  • Exotic, dangerous or wild animal licensing

There are a number of documents which must be submitted along with the licence fee for all applications (including renewals), you will find the documents required within the guidance but if you have any doubt then please contact environmentalhealth@knowsley.gov.uk.

Please note that your application will not be accepted without this documentation.

Licencing process and fees

To apply for an animal licence, or renew an existing one, please submit the required documents and licence fee. Your application will not be accepted without all of the required documentation.

Dog breeding – (Initial licence will also need cost of vet fees, if licence refused refund of £80) £478
Dog boarding in kennels- (if licence refused £80 refund will be applicable) £419
Home Boarding of dogs – (if licence refused refund of £80) £347
Dog day care- (if licence refused refund of £80) £419
Cat boarding – (if licence refused refund of £80) £419

If you are applying for a combination of activities, you will be charged at highest fee plus additional charge of £214.
