Sandwich fillings

Use the sandwich filler guide to help choose some new ideas to add into your child’s lunches.

Some top tips

  • Why not get creative using biscuit cutters to make fun shapes with the bread
  • Invite the kids along shopping to help select their sandwich fillers
  • To help increase fibre intake try to choose wholegrain versions of bread
  • It can be a good idea to freeze a variety of breads so you can always have something different to choose from such as wraps, bagels, rolls etc
  • If creating your own sandwich filing such as tuna mayo, make a big batch at the start of the week to simply spoon into sandwiches each day
  • A great way to get children to eat more vegetables/salads is by adding small amounts into their sandwiches such as spinach or lettuce to plain ham or adding sweetcorn or chopped peppers into tuna

Filling ideas:

  • Soft cheese and salad - Using 2 tablespoons of low-fat cream cheese. Cucumber and lettuce would work well!
  • Tuna mayonnaise and sweetcorn - Half a tin of drained tinned tuna in spring water, mixed into 1 tbsp reduced fat mayonnaise and 1 heaped tablespoon of sweetcorn.
  • Spicy chicken and salad - Add roughly 85g of chopped chicken to 1 tablespoon of Greek yoghurt/mayonnaise. Add in a pinch of curry powder and chilli powder. A good salad choice would be lettuce, peppers and cucumbers.
  • Hummus and pitta bread sticks - Put 2 heaped tablespoons of hummus into a small pot. Slice a pitta bread into long stick shapes. Makes a great alternative to a typical sandwich, you could also serve carrot or pepper sticks too.
  • Red pesto and cream cheese - Simply spread 1 tablespoon of red pesto and 2 tablespoons of cream cheese onto your bread of choice. Adding cucumber would be great to add some crunch.
  • Egg mayonnaise and salad - Add one boiled egg chopped into small chunks to 1 tablespoon of reduced fat mayonnaise and mix together. Add the mix to your bread of choice with spinach or lettuce.
  • Salmon and cucumber - Mix half a tin of salmon to 1 tablespoon of reduced fat mayonnaise. Spread onto your bread, adding some sliced cucumber.
  • Easy coronation chicken - Mix together 2 tablespoons of chopped up cooked chicken, 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise and a pinch of mild curry powder, half a teaspoon of mango chutney.
  • Turkey, salad and coleslaw - Simply spoon 1 tablespoon of coleslaw onto your bread, adding 2 slices of turkey and salad of your choice.
