Clean Air Day 2026

Clean Air Day - 18 June 2026

Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest campaign to raise awareness of air pollution and its impact on our health.

Air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to our health. Breathing polluted air affects everyone and is linked to a wide range of health problems throughout life, from premature birth and childhood asthma to heart and lung disease, diabetes and strokes in later life.

By taking action to reduce air pollution, we can all help protect our health, improve our environment, and make Knowsley a healthier place to live and work.

Simple actions for cleaner air

There are lots of small changes we can all make that add up to a big difference:

Walk, cycle or use public transport

  • Leave the car at home for short journeys
  • Walk or cycle where possible
  • Use public transport instead of driving

Turn off your engine when parked

  • Avoid leaving your engine running (idling), especially near schools and homes
  • Idling increases pollution and wastes fuel

Burn cleaner at home

  • Use DEFRA-approved fuels and appliances if you have a stove or fireplace
  • Never burn household waste or wet wood

Improve air quality indoors

  • Open windows regularly to ventilate your home
  • Reduce indoor pollution from cooking, cleaning, and heating

Shop local

  • Support local businesses
  • Reduce the need for longer car journeys and deliveries

Spread the word

  • Share Clean Air Day messages with others
  • Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to take action

Why clean air matters

Cleaner air benefits everyone. Reducing air pollution can:

  • Improve health outcomes for children and adults
  • Help people live longer, healthier lives
  • Protect the natural environment
  • Support a stronger local economy

What is Knowsley Council doing?

Knowsley Council is committed to improving air quality across the borough.

The Air Quality Strategy 2024–2027 sets out key priorities to:

  • Reduce emissions from homes, businesses, and industry
  • Tackle pollution from transport
  • Raise awareness and encourage behaviour change
  • Improve indoor air quality

This work supports the Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and ambition to reach net zero emissions from its own estates and services by 2040.
