If you have been married or have entered into a civil partnership before

If either of you has been divorced from a marriage or has obtained dissolution from a civil partnership in England or Wales, we will need to see the original court stamped decree absolute/final order/dissolution. This must be a paper copy. Please note that, if the name appearing on this document differs from the name on the other documentation being provided for notice of marriage, a linking document must be provided (e.g. previous marriage certificate).

If you have been divorced in England or Wales

You will need to provide the original court-stamped decree absolute or dissolution. This must be a paper copy. If the name on this document is different from the name on your other documentation, you will also need to provide a linking document, such as a previous marriage certificate.

If you have been divorced abroad

If the divorce/dissolution took place in a foreign country we will need to see the original documents, plus an official English translation if necessary.  In order for the documentation to be checked an additional charge will be incurred.  Please contact us on 0151 443 2900 and select option 3 for further information.

If you are widowed

If either of you is a widow, widower or surviving civil partner we will need to see a certified copy of your partner's death certificate and in some cases your marriage/civil partnership certificate.

If you have already married each other abroad

You will only need to marry again in the UK if you are not sure whether your foreign marriage is legal.

It is important you provide the correct documents at your appointment so we can complete your notice of marriage.
