Grounds maintenance

The grounds maintenance service includes grass cutting, weed control and the maintenance of hedges and shrubbery. Find out more here.

Services

Our ground maintenance service runs from March to October each year and provide the following:

Grass cutting

We cut the grass on verges in Knowsley every two weeks from March to October, unless the weather is bad. We cut a total of 3.8 million square meters of grass per year, which is the same as 4,784 football pitches.

We don't remove the grass clippings, as they put nutrients back into the soil and help the grass grow healthy. But we do remove the clippings from footpaths and the highway for safety reasons.

High speed roads are maintained up to three times per year.

  •  A580 – East Lancashire Road
  • M62
  • A562 – Speke to Widnes Road
  • A5300 – Knowsley Expressway
  • Tarbock Island – M62 Junction 6

Strategic roads are maintained six times per year.

  •  A57 – Liverpool Road
  • A58 – Prescot Bypass
  • A506 – Valley Road
  • A5207 – Moorgate Road
  • A5208 – South Boundary Road / Coopers Lane
  • B5199 – Roby Road / Archway Road

Rural roads are maintained twice per year.

  •  Netherley Road
  • Cronton Road
  • Greensbridge Lane
  • Cartbridge Lane
  • Lower Road
  • Gerrards Lane
  • Water Lane
  • Prescot Road
  • Stockswell Road
  • Cross Hillocks Road
  • Alder Lane
  • Pingwood Lane
  • North Perimeter Road

Tall grass areas

Knowsley Council has created tall grass areas along some roadside verges.

As part of the council's Climate Emergency Declaration, which committed to creating more natural green spaces in the borough, a small number of natural tall grass sites have been created along roadside verges. See a list of all tall grass areas in the borough.

Weed control

We spray the borough's highways and footways twice a year to control weeds.

We use approved chemicals, well-maintained equipment, and take account of weather conditions to protect the environment. We do not spray during rain or wind to prevent overspray.

Weeds start to die off within 7-10 days of being sprayed with herbicide. We then return to scrape out and remove the dead vegetation.

Winter hedge and shrubbery maintenance

We maintain council-owned hedges and shrubs once a year during the winter, from November to February. This includes scheduled maintenance of ornamental and field hedges, cutting back shrubbery, and extensive litter clearance in hard-to-reach areas. We avoid the bird nesting season, from February to August, in line with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Privately owned land

We do not maintain privately owned land unless we have a service level agreement with the landowner. If you live in an area with a registered social landlord, such as Livv Housing Group or Riverside Housing, they are responsible for the maintenance of their sites.
