While it's crucial for building owners to maintain their structures to prevent them from posing a risk to the public, there are instances where Building Control may need to intervene, such as following a fire, vehicle impact, or due to inadequate upkeep or neglect.

Under the Building Act 1984, Building Control has the authority to take immediate action to address any imminent hazards or initiate legal proceedings through the Magistrates Court if the threat is less immediate.

We always prioritise contacting the building owner to provide them with the opportunity to address the issue, but in emergency situations, it may not be possible to reach them if they are unavailable. All expenses incurred will be billed to the building owner and registered as a charge against the property.

If you have concerns with the condition of a building and the owner is unwilling to take action, this can be reported to us at bcsubmissions@knowsley.gov.uk or by telephoning 0151 443 2350.
