Parenting contracts

If you are struggling to support your child's school attendance, your child's school or the local authority may offer to enter into a parenting contract with you. This is a voluntary agreement between you and the school or local authority where you agree to take certain steps to help your child attend school regularly, and the school or local authority agrees to provide you with the support you need to do this.

Parenting contracts can be helpful for a variety of reasons. For example, they can help you to:

  • Develop a plan to address the underlying causes of your child's truancy
  • Identify and access the support services that you and your child need
  • Set clear expectations and goals for improving your child's attendance
  • Build a positive relationship with the school
