The law

School attendance is compulsory for all children aged 5 to 16.

Parents and carers are responsible for making sure their children receive an education, either by sending them to school or by providing an effective education at home.

If your child is registered at a school, you must seek the school's permission for any absences. If your child does not attend the school they are registered at, the local authority may take legal action against you.

We understand that there may be times when your child needs to miss school, but we encourage you to work with the school to minimize absences and ensure your child receives the best possible education.
