Hairdressers and barbers

To apply for a licence to open a hairdressers or barbers, you must meet certain requirements. Find out more about applying for this licence here.

Under the County of Merseyside Act 1980, all hairdressers and barbers must register with the council.

After we receive your application, an Environmental Health Practitioner will visit your premises to check health and safety standards and to make sure that they meet our byelaws.

These byelaws require that:

  • Your premises are structurally sound, in good repair, and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Your furniture and equipment are cleanable.
  • Your protective clothing, towels, and cloths are suitable and clean.
  • Your combs, brushes, and other instruments are disposable or thoroughly cleaned and disinfected where necessary.
  • Your waste, including sharps and clinical waste, is disposed of correctly.

We will risk-rate your premises to determine how often we need to inspect them.
