Registering a death

Death and bereavements can be a difficult time, find out more here about the simple steps to register a death here.

How to use the Tell Us Once service

To use the Tell Us Once service, you will need a unique Tell Us Once reference number, which you will receive from the Registrar after you have registered the death. You can then access the service online via GOV.UK.

If you have been issued with a Coroner's Fact of Death (Interim Death Certificate), you may still be able to use the service. The Registrar will advise you on how to do this.

Before using Tell Us Once, it will be helpful to have the following information about the deceased

  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • National Insurance number
  • Driving licence number (if applicable)
  • Vehicle registration number (if applicable)
  • Passport number (if applicable)

You will also need the following information

  • Details of any benefits or entitlements the deceased was receiving, such as State Pension or Universal Credit
  • Details of any local council services the deceased was receiving, such as Adult Social Services or a Blue Badge
  • The name and address of the deceased's next of kin
  • The name and address of any surviving spouse or civil partner (if applicable)
  • The name, address, and contact details of the person or company dealing with the deceased's estate (property, belongings, and money), known as their 'executor' or 'administrator' (if applicable)
  • Details of any public sector or armed forces pension schemes the deceased was getting or paying into (if applicable)

Once you have all of this information, you can visit the GOV.UK website to start the Tell Us Once process.
