Registering a death

A death must be registered within five days, unless a coroner is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Deaths are registered at the local register office for the area where the death took place.

The certifying GP or hospital doctor will issue a medical certificate of cause of death, which will be sent directly to Knowsley Register Office. Once received, the register office will contact the family by phone to schedule an appointment for the death registration.
