General Advice and Guidance

The primary/secondary education information booklet is available to download from the links below – however, please also refer to the information below which reflects process changes due to altered working arrangements.

  • Primary composite prospectus 2020/21 (PDF)
  • Secondary composite prospectus 2020/21 (PDF)
  • Where a place has been offered in a Knowsley School, there is no requirement to formally accept the place – it is assumed that your child will take up this placement – the school have your details and will contact you.
  • If your circumstances change or your child no longer requires the place offered, you should contact Knowsley School Admissions without delay to confirm this.
  • The Local Authority will not typically withdraw places once they are offered unless it is confirmed that alternative education provision is in place for the child or in the circumstance that false information has been used to gain placement at an oversubscribed school.

Refusals: Where you have been refused a higher preference school than that allocated, it is because other applicants had a higher priority for the available places when the individual school oversubscription criteria was applied. For Knowsley schools, a breakdown of how places were allocated at schools that were oversubscribed in the allocation of on-time applications can be found by following this link.

Waiting lists: Your child’s name will normally be on a waiting list for any school where a place has been refused. Waiting lists will remain open until December 2020. You can contact the admissions team to find out where your child is currently placed on a Knowsley school waiting list, but please be aware that waiting lists are ‘live’ and your child can move up or down the list depending on the movement of other applicants. Please notify the admissions team if you have any change of circumstance that could affect your child’s place on a waiting list (e.g change of address).

Appeals: You have the right to appeal against any refusal decision to an independent appeal. Your allocation letter contains more information regarding the appeals process – if you wish to lodge an appeal against the refusal of a Knowsley school, the following procedures apply:

  • Community Primary Schools: email schooladmissions@knowsley.gov.uk to request an appeal form stating which school your appeal is for.
  • Academies/Church of England Schools: contact the individual school directly to request an appeal form.
  • Catholic schools: contact the Liverpool Archdiocese on 0151 522 1071 or visit the website.

Please be aware that delays to the usual appeal timetable are likely, and appeal hearings may have to be undertaken in a different format. Admission Authorities will follow guidance from the Department for Education and more information will be available as soon as possible. We currently request that appeals are lodged in accordance with the expected timetable to assist with the management of this process.

For information regarding the typical appeal timetable, please visit the appeals timetable page.

Late applications and making a change to your school preferences: If you live in Knowsley and have a child who is of age to start reception class at primary school or transfer to year 7 of secondary school and you have not yet applied for a place for September, or you wish to make a change to an existing application, please follow the link for more information.

If your enquiry relates to accepting an offer of place, the refusal of a school, waiting list placements or making an appeal for schools in other local authority areas, you must contact that authority directly for information. If you live in another authority area and want to make a late application or change of preference for a Knowsley school, you must also contact your home authority who will co-ordinate this.
