Annual School Admission Procedures - September Entry

The application period for 2021 entry to reception class of primary school and year 7 of secondary education will open for Knowsley residents on Friday 11 September.

  • If your child’s birthday falls on or between 1 September 2016 to 31 August 2017 you can apply for a reception class place – the national closing date for applications is 15 January 2021.

OR

  • If your child is currently in Year 6 at primary school, and typically has a date of birth that falls on or between 1 September 2009 to 31 August 2010, now is the time to apply for your secondary place – the national closing date for applications is 31 October 2020.

The Knowsley application is for use by Knowsley residents only, if you live in another authority you must apply on your home authority’s application, but you can name primary and secondary schools in Knowsley as preferences if you wish.

Although Knowsley does not have any selective secondary schools, it is recognised that some parents will name preferences for selective schools in neighbouring local authority areas. Knowsley residents must still submit their application by the national deadline of 31 October 2020 but, to assist with concerns that results from entrance exams may not be known by the deadline date due to Covid-19 restrictions, Knowsley residents will be permitted to change a preference made for a selective school to a preference for a non-selective school after the closing date and that preference change will not be deemed as a late application.
Changes in respect of selective school preferences should be made by 7 November 2020 (this date has been provided by neighbouring LAs who have selective schools).

The Local Authority produce a composite prospectus (Information for Parents) which provides detailed information to guide parents/carers through the admissions process. Before applying for your primary (reception class) place or secondary school place for September 2021, please read the relevant Information for Parents Booklet as it contains vital information regarding the application process and explains how the allocation of school places is undertaken.

The answer to any questions you have about the admission process will most likely be found within these documents but please contact the team if you have any further questions.

Applying online

All applicants are requested to make an online application – all you will need to do this is an email account.

The online application is quick and easy to use and will guide you through the process but please check the individual school admission policies and requirements and read the relevant admission prospectus before you make your application. Once you have completed the application and submitted it, you will receive confirmation that it has been submitted to the Local Authority.

If you have received a letter from the Local Authority indicating that your child is expected to start reception class or transfer to secondary school in September 2021, the letter will have an identification number unique to your child. If you enter this number when prompted as you are completing the form, your child’s details should appear and then you can add your school preferences. Don’t worry if you haven’t had a letter as you can still complete the application.

You can return to your application at any time up to the closing date to make changes. For more information about making changes, please visit the late applications and change of preference page

If for any reason you cannot make your application online, please contact the school admissions team by email to schooladmissions@knowsley.gov.uk or telephone (0151) 443 3372 / 5143 / 5142 to request a paper application form. Please be aware, if you apply by paper application, you will not be able to access your allocation result online or by email – a letter will be issued by post on national offer day so you are not likely to receive your allocation result until after this date.

Open events

We recommend you obtain as much information about the schools you are interested in to help you decide on your preferences. As well as reading the school admission policy, attendance at open events can also be helpful.

Please remember, attending these events has no effect on how places are offered but will provide an insight as to what the schools can offer.

Knowsley secondary school open days/evenings

These events will comply with any requirements of social distancing. In the event that schools cannot hold open events due to any restrictions imposed by the management of Covid-19, ours schools will do their very best to ensure you have all the information you require.
