Knowsley residents have a greener Christmas

Published on: Wednesday, 10-December-2014

Knowsley residents can enjoy a greener festive season by joining the ’12 days of Christmas’ waste reduction and recycling challenge.

Starting from Saturday, 13 December right up to the big day, residents can visit the council’s website, and find a different suggestion for each day, helping them to avoid waste and save money by re-using or recycling things that would normally end up in the bin.

Here are a few of the suggestions:

  • Get it tagged - make your own gift tags from last year’s Christmas cards.
  • Green greetings – consider sending e-Christmas cards, or make a donation to charity instead.
  • Great gifts, less rubbish – can you make any gifts, or give friends a voucher – maybe offering to cook them a meal or clean their car?
  • Handbags and gladrags: upcycle or remodel your current wardrobe, so you don’t need to splash out on a new outfit
  • Lovely leftovers – start looking for great recipes for your festive leftovers. For some tips visit
  • It’s a wrap! – decide how you’re going to recycle the packaging when you open your gifts. Wrapping paper and cardboard can all be recycled in your grey bin.

Cllr Graham Morgan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Delivery said: “By planning what to buy, using what we already have, making lists and shopping smarter we can all save time and money, as well as creating less waste.

“We produce a huge amount of waste at this time of year, so we have a great opportunity to recycle as much as we can. Remember that all those cards, bottles, cans and cardboard packing can go in your grey bin.”

And when the festivities are over, Knowsley residents can recycle their real Christmas trees between Sunday, 4 January 2015 and Friday, 9 January 2015 by taking them to drop off points at: Halewood Park • Stadt Moers Park, Whiston • Millbrook Park Millennium Green, Kirkby • Court Hey Park, Huyton • Holy Family Social Club, Cronton.

Information about the revised collection arrangements over the Christmas and New Year period are included on an annual waste collection calendar distributed to every household across the borough.

Residents can also download the calendars and find further information by visiting or ringing the Environmental Helpline on 0151 443 2400.
