BMX coaching session

BMX riders were put through their paces at Knowsley’s BMX track and Velodrome when three times world champion Shanaze Reade rode in to host a coaching clinic.

Shanaze is a professional BMX racer and track cyclist who has represented Team GB at the Olympics. She has just returned from a year racing in the ABA BMX Series in America and has become a very well known and much adulated figure within the sport.

On Saturday, Shanaze put 20 BMX riders through their paces, helping them brush up their skills and learn a few tricks along the way. She spent time working with riders, encouraging them to work on their racing line, offering advice on tackling gates and berms, and getting them thinking about fitness and general performance.

The riders, mainly members of Knowsley BMX Club, based at the Knowsley leisure and Culture Park facility, were aged from six upwards.

Shanaze said:  “Knowsley BMX track and Velodrome is an amazing facility, everyone is really lucky to have access to such an exciting National Standard BMX track. I have trained on this track before and it has some great features to really push riders, of every standard. I’d love to see more riders making use of the track to develop the sport.”

Alex Pettitt, six, who started riding at Knowsley BMX Club in 2013, took part and said: “It was brilliant to meet Shanaze, the coaching was great and I learnt about jumping and how to get past other riders on the berms when I’m racing.”

Paul Moore, 29, who races for Knowsley BMX Club said “As well as the junior riders, Shanaze certainly put the Senior riders through their paces, highlighting key pointers to improve our fitness and race technique, and encouraging us to step up and try new skills. It was great to get such valuable tuition from a World Champion.”

It is not the first time that Knowsley’s BMX track and Velodrome has attracted world class athletes. Last year, Knowsley BMX Club hosted Round One of the 2014 North Regions BMX series at the track, an event which is set to return again on May 3. This is expected to attract more than 250 riders from around the North of England and beyond, some of whom also compete at National and International level.
