If your business activities could be harmful to the environment, or to people’s health, you’ll need an environmental permit to operate.
The permit gives your business permission to carry out certain types of activities at a specific location and sets conditions to be followed to protect the environment and people’s health.
About environmental permits
The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 state which businesses are required by law to be regulated.
Examples of the types of business which require permits to operate include waste treatment facilities, industrial activities and farms. If the law requires your business to have an environmental permit, the business would be breaking the law operating without one.
How to apply for an environmental permit
In England and Wales, a business or individual who needs an environmental permit must apply to the Environment Agency or their local authority, depending on what activity they want to carry out.
