What happens after the petition is submitted?
The Petitions Officer will look at the
petition and assess whether or not it is ‘valid’.
If it is valid, the Petitions Officer will arrange for a letter
to be sent to the petition organiser setting out what the council
intends to do with the petition. This will be done within 10
working days of the petition being received. The information in the
letter, describing the council’s intended actions, will be shown in
the petition register (the petition register will not include
anybody’s personal details).
If the acknowledgement letter sets out steps the council intends
to take, the Petitions Officer will write to the petition organiser
again once all those steps have been carried out. This will usually
be done within six months of the first letter.
