European Information
The European Union (EU) is a partnership of 27 democratic
countries working together for the benefit of all their
citizens. It aims to promote social and economic progress
among its members, common foreign and security positions, police
and judicial co-operation in criminal matters, and European
citizenship.
The European Union consists of:
- The Council of the European Union, which represents the member
states and is the EU’s main decision-making body.
- The European Parliament, which represents the people, shares
legislative and budgetary power with the Council of the European
Union.
- The European Commission, which represents the common interest
of the EU, is the main executive body.
Knowsley, as part of the Liverpool City Region, has benefited
considerably from European funding over recent years. This
funding has been spent in a variety of ways including helping to
improve the local economy and creating new jobs.
Between 2007-2013, Merseyside as a whole will receive more than
500 million euros (roughly £450 million) from the EU Structural
Funds.
EU Networking
In order to better engage in European issues, Knowsley is a
member of the Merseyside Brussels Office
(MBO). Based in Brussels, the MBO helps to
influence policy, access transnational funds and build European
partnerships.
