Equality and diversity
The council is committed to equality of opportunity, both in the
way that potential employees are encouraged to seek and gain
employment within the council and in the way that existing
employees are treated.
No applicant or employee will receive less favourable treatment
than others because of their colour, creed, ethnic or national
origin, disability, age, gender, marital status, sexuality or
sexual orientation, religious beliefs, trade union activity or
responsibility for dependants.
The council has adopted a number of equality and diversity
policies and schemes which you can download below:
Knowsley Council is required to publish by January 2012
information that demonstrates our compliance with the Equality Duty
as defined by the Equality Act 2010. This means that we have to
show that in decision-making processes we have had due regard to
the need to:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
and any other conduct prohibited by the Act;
- advance equality of opportunity between people who share a
protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
- foster good relations between
people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not
share it
These are sometimes referred to as the three aims or arms of the
general equality duty. Having due regard for advancing equality
involves:
- Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people due to
their protected characteristics.
- Taking steps to meet the needs of people from protected groups
where these are different from the needs of other people.
- Encouraging people from
protected groups to participate in public life or in other
activities where their participation is disproportionately
low.
Knowsley Council has to demonstrate awareness
of how decisions made and services delivered affect
people who share different protected characteristics, including
age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil
partnership (but only in respect of eliminating unlawful
discrimination), pregnancy and maternity, race (this includes
ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality), religion or
belief (this includes lack of belief), sex (gender), and sexual
orientation.
Knowsley Council gathers a range of information which is use to
inform policies, decisions and work. Data, policies,
strategies, reports, groups and networks and useful links are
detailed below. These help to inform our consultation
process.
