About your council

The council is made up of 63 councillors with one-third elected three years in four. Councillors are democratically accountable to residents of their ward. The overriding duty of councillors is to the whole community, but they have a special duty to their constituents, including those who did not vote for them.

All councillors meet at Full Council to approve the constitution, set annual budgets and agree council policies.  The council also appoints:

• The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the council
• The Leader of the Council
• Cabinet Members
• Scrutiny Committees
• Standards Committee
• Regulatory and other committees
• Area Partnership Boards
