Footpath maintenance

With the exception of some Public Rights of Way in countryside leisure parkland areas, maintenance issues are managed by the Planning and Transportation Division.

A limited budget is available for maintaining Public Rights of Way, and a programme of work is drawn up each year. This is usually based on previous complaints and frequency of use. A Public Right of Way may have a surface of grass, dirt, stone or bitmac. The Council is only obliged to maintain it to that standard.

The Council ensures all rights of way are signed and way marked appropriately to enable users to follow the legal route of the path.

In general, the Council is responsible for maintaining the footbridges on Public Rights of Way throughout the Borough.

If you see someone vandalising a footbridge, stile or signpost, or notice one in poor condition, please contact us using the details below.
