Road Safety and Casualty Reduction

Road Safety

Road safety is one of Knowsley Councils highest priorities. This has transformed the road casualty profile of the borough and child casualties have fallen dramatically in Knowsley.

  • Knowsley Council's Road Safety Team is responsible for delivering the road safety education programme to all Primary, Secondary and Special Schools in the borough.
  • The team deliver training to; Taxi Drivers, Nursery Nurses, Child-Minders, Neighbourhood Wardens, Teaching Assistants and many others.
  • The team also work in partnership with the other Merseyside Road Safety Teams to promote local and national publicity campaigns, for example; ‘In-car Safety’ and ‘Speed Awareness’ campaigns.
  • Knowsley has attracted national recognition from a host of government bodies and other organisations, most recently with the award of Beacon Status for Road Safety in March 2006.

Road safety delivering casualty reduction

In the Local Transport Plan (LTP) base period (1994-1998) there was an average of 95 people killed or seriously injured on Knowsley roads. Of these, 29 were children aged 15 or under. In the last five years, the programme has delivered:

  • Safer children - a reduction of 53% in the number of those killed or seriously injured
  • Safer adults - a reduction of 32% in the number of those killed or seriously injured
The reductions in children and all people killed or seriously injured exceed the milestones set by the council when calculating its 2010 target.
