Abandoned vehicles

An abandoned vehicle is classed as a vehicle that is not stolen, has no registered keeper, and has been left on a public highway.

If you are aware of any abandoned vehicles in your area, please report them on the Environmental Helpline: 0151 443 2400.

After placing your call we will:

  • Respond to your complaints within three working days
  • Inspect vehicles suspected as being abandoned to find out:
  1. If the vehicle has a registered keeper
  2. Is it an end of life vehicle (not stolen or registered)
  3. If it is a stolen vehicle
  4. If it is burnt out
If on the first inspection a vehicle is classed as 2 above, then a twenty- four hour notice will be placed on the windscreen advising of the action to follow. If the vehicle is not claimed then it will be handed over to a designated scrap agent for disposal.

If the vehicle is classed as 1 or 3 above, then the Police will be informed.

If on the first inspection a vehicle is classed as 4 above, then the Police will be notified and they will make arrangements for it’s disposal.
