Transport Planning and Strategies
Local Transport Plan
The transportation strategy for Knowsley is set out in the 5-year Local Transport Plan (LTP) for Merseyside. This is a joint plan for Merseyside, required by Central Government, and produced in cooperation with the other transport authorities. The first LTP for Merseyside covered the period 2001/02 to 2005/06. A second LTP for Merseyside to cover the period 2006/07 to 2010/11 was submitted to Central Government earlier in the year. Both of these reports can be viewed on the website below.
The LTP describes the positive steps that we will take to improve the transport choices for everyone in the area, to ensure that the transport network (roads, buses, trains, pavements and cycleways) meet the travel demands of everyone living in, working in or visiting Merseyside.
Pedestrian Strategy
Walking is an important mode of travel, both in its own right and in the integration of all other modes such as public transport and the private car. In view of this, the Council recognises that improving facilities for pedestrians is a key priority for the successful delivery of an integrated transport strategy.A Draft Merseyside Pedestrian Strategy has been developed to supplement the second Local Transport Plan (LTP2) for Merseyside. The strategy sets out Merseyside’s policy towards encouraging walking and pedestrian improvements and has been developed in line with Government policy to achieve an overall sustainable transport strategy. The Draft Pedestrian Strategy will be the subject of a consultation exercise during 2006.
Increasing the levels of walking in the Borough will be achieved through reducing traffic speeds in certain areas, improving the local environment, providing training and promoting the associated health benefits of walking.
