Become an accredited sports club

Becoming an accredited sports club helps to reassure the community that your club is safe, effective and child friendly.

Your club can be accredited in two ways:

Clubmark

A national scheme which accredits clubs that comply with the minimum standards in four specific areas.

  • The Playing programme
  • Duty of care and safeguarding and protecting children
  • Sports equity and ethics
  • Club management

Knowsley Clubmark

A local accreditation which validates clubs that do not have a National Governing Body of Sport (NGB) Clubmark accreditation scheme, but comply with all the minimum operating standards required. The accreditation recognises the development and commitment of clubs that are deemed safe, effective and child friendly.  It also validates and recognises clubs with adult participation only.

School and club links

Sports clubs with Clubmark or Knowsley Clubmark status or working towards this accreditation will be able to form links with schools, demonstrating that the sport club is high quality through accreditation from their relevant National Governing Body of sport.

The School Club Links programme is a fundamental part of the Government’s National School Sports Strategy.  Its purpose is to strengthen the links between schools and local sports clubs and, in so doing, increase the number of children and young people who become members of high quality clubs.  Hopefully, by creating effective school club links, it will lead to young people adopting a healthier lifestyle, enjoying sport and encouraging life long participation.

A School Club Link is an agreement between a school and a community based sports club to work together to:

  • Meet the needs of young people,
  • Provide new and varied opportunities for young people,
  • Help young people to realise their ambitions
  • Agree good standards of provision.

This will ensure that children and young people will be participating in clubs which are deemed safe, child friendly and will consist of high quality fully qualified coaches. Sports clubs which meet the necessary standards which are local to the school will be prioritised when forming school-club links to ensure that barriers such as transport cost to children are at a minimal.
