Wignall Park

During the mid to late 1950s, a start was made on a second
traditional park site in Kirkby at what was known as Wignall's
Plantation.
During the 1960s, vandals turned the dense woodland into a bare
skeleton of dead and mutilated trees. The only answer was to clear
the whole park and start from scratch.
This was done and 'Webster Park' was constructed, containing two
crown bowling greens, eight hard tennis courts, a children's
playground, paddling pond and rose and sensory
gardens.
The sensory garden was the first of its kind in Kirkby, laid out
with raised flowerbeds and handrails with a musical fountain in a
raised pool as well as braille labels to all plants. The park was
opened by the BBC in 1966.
Today Wignall Park is a popular green space for the
whole community. It boasts a number of facilities
including a multi-use games area, comprising a
kickabout about area with a five-a-side pitch and basketball
court. There is a children's playground and on grassed areas
there is space for football and other sporting activities.
