Conservation skills and Interpretation Project

Young Conservation Officers Group
This strand of the project is aimed at young
people in school aged 14 to 16 who are enrolled on the Young
Apprenticeship Scheme in construction.
It will inform the pupils about the career
choices open to them in the heritage sector by giving them advice
and experiences to best equip them to take the next steps.
This will be achieved by offering a series of
activities that may include:
- Site visits
- Seminars
- Skills workshops
- Work shadowing
This year’s programme is currently being delivered and will
conclude at the end of December 2009. Here are some of the
activities they have been involved in:
- They have carried out vital dune conservation work at Formby in
partnership with the National Trust.
- Explored and saw first hand the issues relating to the ongoing
maintenance and conservation of an historic site at Norton
Priory.
- Paid a visit to St Andrew’s Church in Liverpool, a building
currently being restored. Here they met Liverpool City Council’s
Buildings at Risk Officer, the site manager and observed and spoke
to the skilled craftsmen working on the job.
- In addition they have taken part in workshops to gain an
understanding of and learn the basic skills in stone carving and
lime rendering.
