Traffic signs and road marking
Traffic signs and road markings are placed on the highway to
inform drivers, cyclists and pedestrians about the road
ahead.
Each sign and road marking has a specific purpose and common
examples can be found in the Highway Code.
In general, traffic signs and road markings have three main
aims:
- To provide information that will help road users to travel
along the network safely and efficiently
- To provide clear information to the road user about
restrictions and prohibitions that are in operation
- To contribute positively to the environment
All signs and road markings that are introduced on the road must
be authorised by the Network Management team.
How do I report a damaged or missing sign?
To report a missing or damaged sign, please
complete the form online or call 0151 443 3100.
If possible, please provide:
- The identification number on the item (if available)
- What type of sign is missing or damaged
- The location of the item - the name of the road and number of
the nearest house, or other form of landmark
I would like to request a sign, how do I do this?
All requests for additional traffic signs should be made to
Knowsley Council’s Network Management team, who can be contacted on
0151 443 3100.
On receiving your request, an engineer will undertake a site
visit to independently assess the request.
Please note, the authorisation for an additional sign will only
be granted for those signs that improve traffic flow and road
safety.
If my sign request is authorised, will I be charged for the
work?
For the majority of signs, the council will pay for the supply,
installation and maintenance of it. However, for signs that
are not legally required, such as tourist signs, the council will
request payment for the supply, installation and a fee to cover the
cost of maintenance.
