Preparing for emegencies

The chances of being caught up in a major emergency are small, but it is important to be prepared.

If an incident occurs which causes injuries or threatens life, call 999 or 112 as soon as it is safe to do so.

You should also remember to take the following steps:

  • Stay calm and don’t panic
  • Don’t put yourself or others in danger
  • Listen to advice from the emergency services
  • Check yourself for injuries before helping others

If you are not directly involved in the emergency but think you may be in danger, you should go inside a safe building, stay there until advised otherwise and listen to local radio or television for more information.

Reporting an emergency

If you experience or witness an emergency or crime, call the emergency services on 999 or 112 as soon as safely possible.  You can also dial 101 to report crime or other concerns to the police that do not require an emergency response (for more information on when to use 101 see the link to the right).
