Travel photography competition

1 September 2010

Budding photographers from across Merseyside have the opportunity to display their work at the region’s leading visitor attractions.

Photographers of all ages are invited to submit images of popular landmarks and visitor attractions from across the region, as part of a TravelWise competition. To raise awareness of greener, healthier ways of getting from A to B, entries must incorporate walking, cycling or public transport – all more sustainable alternatives to the car.

The winning photographs will be put on public display during TravelWise Week (20-26 September). The annual sustainable travel awareness week is this year focussing on leisure time - encouraging people to travel by cycle, foot, bus or train when going on days out across Merseyside.

Members of the public will be able to have their say on the entries online and winners will be picked for each of the five Merseyside local authorities across two age categories (under 16, and 16 and over), before two overall winners are chosen. The winners will also have a chance to gain further inspiration, with free tickets to a number of leading attractions.

David McNaughton, TravelWise Officer, said: “We want Merseyside residents to make the most of their leisure time and hope that, away from the hustle and bustle of the working week, people will take the time to consider the alternatives to jumping in the car at the weekend.

“We have some of the UK’s most exciting visitor attractions in Merseyside and TravelWise, with the support of funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has been working with them to make it easier for people to reach their sites without using the car. A walk or cycle ride makes the journey part of the fun of the day and gets families out and about in the fresh air, as well as cutting congestion.

“The competition’s only two criteria are that the photographs must capture both a popular Merseyside tourist site and sustainable travel. Whether it’s a bike ride to the Dream sculpture in St Helens, or a morning stroll past the Gormley statues in Crosby or along New Brighton seafront, there is inspiration right across the region and we can’t wait to see what budding local photographers produce when asked to capture the best of what Merseyside has to offer.”

Photographers can submit their entries to the competition by emailing info@letstravelwise.org, along with details of their name, address and which age category they are entering. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Wednesday 8 September.
