Heritage walks book now available

29 October 2009

An exciting new Heritage Walks book is now available, free of charge, from the local libraries and One Stop Shops in Knowsley. Knowlsey Village walk

The series of six heritage walks around the borough have been developed in partnership with the Mersey Guides. The professional guides researched the walks bringing their wealth of skills and experience to support the project.

The walks vary in length, taking between forty minutes to one-and-a-half hours and all focus on the rich history of the area.

Included in the publication are both contemporary and historic events, combining to give an interesting overview of Knowsley. Some facts might well be new to the reader whilst other information will be more familiar. The books contain all six walks with a map of the route and information about each stopping point. Also included are some rare archive images of each area, courtesy of Knowsley Council Archive Service.

The first free guided walks have now taken place, each led by the guide who wrote them. These proved to be very popular and were enjoyed by all who came along. The guides stamped the walks with their own individual style and encouraged contributions from the walkers, who often added their own stories and memories to bring the walks to life.

Here are some of the comments from the people who joined in:

‘A most informative and interesting walk. As a former resident of Knowsley Village in the 1960s, it brought back most enjoyable memories.’ Mrs. Pat Jones.

‘We have attended 3 of the walks and found them not only very informative but really enjoyable as well. Many thanks to all involved in the provision of the walks.’ Annette Smith.

There will be another series of free guided walks early in 2010. Information will be available on this website and in the local press and libraries.

You can see our guide to the heritage walks online or call 0151 443 2283 if you would like to request a copy of the book by post
