Family history and tracing your ancestors
If you are interested in tracing your ancestors then we can help
you in your search. At Huyton Library you can access a wealth of printed
and microfilmed records including:
- Birth, death and marriage information
- Census returns
- Parish registers and cemetery records
- Electoral rolls
- Trade directories
- Maps
- Local newspapers
Please ring 0151 443 3738 for further details of our holdings or
to reserve a microfilm reader. Why not also visit Knowsley's history website to
look at old photographs and archive material.
We also provide library members with free access to the online
subscription service, Ancestry library, which
is available from all library computers. Ask at your local library for
details.
If you are new to family history research, or are trying to find
your way through the maze of information and resources, don’t worry
– expert advice and guidance to help you on your way is
available.
Family history helpdesk
Run by a knowledgeable and helpful member of staff, the Helpdesk
is currently open once a month on a drop-in basis at Huyton
Library. Although we will not be able to carry out individual
research for you, we will do our best to put you on the right

Family history courses
Tutor led
courses are held regularly in all of our libraries. Please call
the Adult Learning Team on 0151 482 1306 for further details and to
reserve a place.
Archives
Knowsley's archive collections are held at Kirkby Library. You
can visit the archive by appointment Monday to Friday. Our archives
include:
- Maps
- Photographs
- Official documents and records or Knowsley and its predecessor
local authorities
- Original documents produced by local business, individuals,
public bodies and groups and societies
Digital archive collection
We have an
online digital archive which we are always adding to so
you can explore Knowsley's past in pictures.
Submitting items to our archive collection
We collect printed items relating to Knowsley, its people and
its past and we are keen to add to the materials we hold. If you
have any photographs or documents which you think others will find
interesting, please get in touch and help us to build an archive
for the future.
