Private sector tenants and homeowners

Knowsley Council has produced guidance on
a range of important topics relating to private sector tenants and
homeowners.
Housing Advice for Private Sector Tenants
When you live in private rented accommodation
it's important to know your rights. This guidance leaflet contains
information on a range of topics including types of tenancy, rent
and housing benefit, dealing with debt, notice to leave and
protection from harassment and illegal eviction.
Information for New Tenants
Whether you are looking for a new home in the
private rented sector or have just moved into private rented
accommodation, it is important to know your rights and
responsibilities as a tenant. This leaflet gives advice on
what to expect when you move in to a new tenancy, including
guidance on paying bills, council services and information about
ending a tenancy.
The Knowsley bond scheme
The Knowsley bond scheme helps vulnerable people
in Knowsley who are looking for housing in the private rented
sector. Instead of having to pay a deposit, the Council will
make an agreement with your landlord to cover any damages or loss
of rent.
Local Housing Allowance (LHA)
Local Housing Allowances (LHAs) are the maximum
amount that Housing Benefit will pay towards rent on a property in
the borough. The amount that a tenant receives depends on
their individual circumstances. Knowsley Council provides an
up to date guide to LHAs in the borough, including eligibility for
different sizes of property.
Housing Advice for Homeowners
If you own your own home and you are in
arrears with your mortgage payments, your mortgage lender
could be able to get a County Court order and seek
repossession of your home. It is important to act quickly to
avoid this happening. You should contact your lender as soon
as possible to discuss your difficulties. This leaflet
provides practical advice on how to resolve your housing
difficulties and what help is available, including information on
paying your mortgage, budgeting and money advice.
Mortgage Rescue Scheme
If you are having serious difficulties paying your mortgage and
will become homeless if your home is repossessed, you may qualify
for a government-backed mortgage rescue scheme.
