Your housing options

There are many reason that people can get into housing difficulty.  Facing homelessness is stressful and you will need to know the options available to help solve your housing problem.  In many cases by taking the right action early enough, your homelessness can be avoided altogether.

The Your Housing Options leaflet provides information and advice for people who are facing housing difficulties, and explains some of the options available.

You may also find the following leaflets helpful:

Energy efficiency

Guidance is available to help you make your home warmer, cosier and healthier for the winter months, reduce fuel bill costs and let you know about grants that may help.  Find out more about energy efficiency.

The Knowsley Affordable Warmth Strategy was initially launched in 2004. Since then Knowsley has worked successfully with partners to achieve and deliver the aims of the strategy.  These include identifying households that are unable to adequately heat their home at an affordable cost and direct resources and advice to those households. The strategy was updated in 2010 to reflect achievements and bring it up to date.

Are you ready to leave home?

There are many things you will need to decide on before you make a move to set up on your own.

Disabled Facilites Grant

A Disabled Facilities Grant is a local council grant to help towards the cost of adapting your home to enable you to continue to live there.

Housing assistance: scheme closed

There has been considerable economic restraint placed on Local Government following national Government budget decisions.  Unfortunately, this has resulted in the funding which was previously allocated for the purpose of housing assistance being withdrawn. The consequence of this is the Housing Assistance Programme provided by Knowsley Council has had to be withdrawn.

Despite this reduction in our resources, Knowsley Council remains committed to improving housing conditions within the Borough and assisting residents wherever possible.

Whilst we are unable to provide financial assistance, we may be able to assist owner occupiers with advice and guidance.  This could include advice on how to arrange improvement works as well help and support in the selection of contractors. Should you require such assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Housing Renewal Team on: 0151 443 2253 or by email on housing@knowsley.gov.uk .

In the mean time the Council will be maintaining a waiting list for residents seeking financial assistance for home improvements.  Should future funding become available the team will contact those on the waiting list to advise them that the programme has reopened and to ask them to submit an application should they still be interested in financial assistance.

If you wish to have your name included on our records please do not hesitate to contact the Housing Renewal Team, on 0151 443 5834 or housing@knowsley.gov.uk .

Housing Strategy 2011 - 2014

We have developed a new housing strategy for Knowsley. Our new strategy is different from those produced previously. It not only addresses the housing issues experienced by local residents but also clearly connects these with all the other big challenges residents face in terms of economic prosperity, educational attainment, health, climate change and overall sustainability.

The housing strategy sets out our vision for housing in the area from 2011 to 2014 and identifies how we will work with our partners to:

  • Achieve the right quantity and quality of new housing
  • Continuing to raise the quality of the existing housing stock, services and neighbourhoods
  • Connect people to the improved housing offer
