I think I might be homeless - what should I do?

Facing homelessness is stressful. If you think you might be homeless, the council must investigate this. If you are not sure what action you should take you can use our self-assessment questionnaire for some advice on what you should do next.

1. Do you have somewhere you can sleep tonight that is safe for you and your family to stay?

Yes - go to question 2

No - go to outcome A

2. Are you experiencing domestic violence, abuse or harrassment, or do you feel threatened by someone you live with?

Yes - go to outcome A

No - go to question 3

3. Do you live with family or friends or a partner, and they have asked you to leave?

Yes - go to question 8

No - go to question 4

4. Are you living in a private sector tenancy and your landlord has asked you to leave (for any reason)?

Yes - go to question 6

No - go to question 5

5. Are you a homeowner whose mortgage company has threatened to repossess your home?

Yes - go to question 6

No - go to question 7

6. Have you been served with an eviction notice?

Yes - go to question 8

No - go to outcome D

7. Do you have to leave your home for any other reason?

Yes - go to question 8

No - go to outcome E

8. Do you need to leave your home within the next 24 hours?

Yes - go to outcome A

No - go to question 9

9. Do you need to leave your home in the next seven days?

Yes - go to outcome B

No - go to question 10

10. Do you need to leave your home in the next 28 days?

Yes - go to outcome C

No - go to question 11

11. Are you worried that you may need to leave your home if you cannot resolve your current housing difficulties?

Very soon - go to outcome C

We need to speak to you as soon as we can to discuss your housing needs. Please call the housing options service on 0800 694 0280. We are open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm (Wednesday 9am-4pm).  There is also an out of hours service available on the same number in an emergency.

We may be able to help you resolve your housing needs. Please contact the Housing Options Service on 0800 694 0280 during office hours to speak to a Housing Options Officer.
