Homelessness and homelessness prevention

Homelessness

Homelessness prevention

Facing homelessness is stressful. However, in many cases it may be possible to prevent you from becoming homeless – especially if action is taken early enough.  If you are worried that you may become homeless, but have not left your home or do not have to leave in the next 28 days, we may be able to help you to remain in your own home.  This leaflet provides advice and information on what to do if you think you may have to leave your home.

Do not wait until you are actually homeless or about to become homeless before you seek advice.

You can use our homelessness advice checklist to see what steps you can take now to resolve your housing difficulties.

Homelessness

If you consider yourself to be homeless, the council must investigate this.  There is a law about homelessness that guides us on how we should respond.  This leaflet provides guidance about the homelessness process, including information about who qualifies for help from the council, the legal duties we have to you, and advice on how to make an appeal about a homeless decision that we have made.

Guide to temporary accommodation

In some cases, if we are investigating your homelessness or if we have accepted you as homeless, we may have a duty to provide temporary accommodation.  This is accommodation that the council provides for a short period of time while we investigate your situation, or if we have accepted you as unintentionally homeless and in priority need, until we can find a suitable home for you.  This leaflet provides information on who is eligible for temporary accommodation, the type of accommodation we provide, your rights and responsibilities and guidance on what happens once you have been placed in temporary accommodation.
