Environmental policy
The Environmental Policy sets out how the council will minimise
its impact on the environment. A revised policy was approved
by the Council in September 2009, and was updated to reflect
the council's Climate Change Strategy. An action plan will be
developed to make sure that the policy is implemented.
We are committed to maintaining and improving our environmental
performance and action is already taking place in a number of
areas:
- We have signed up to the Northwest Climate Change and
Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change
- We are taking action to reduce our carbon emissions
through our Council Climate Change Strategy
- We use a blend of 5 per cent biodiesel in council fleet
vehicles.
- We have appointed a Travel Plan Coordinator to reduce staff
travel as well as a green guide for staff.
- We are piloting an environmental management system using the
International Standard ISO 14001.
- Sustainability and low environmental impact has been addressed
as priority design principles for Knowsley's new learning centres,
as part of the Future Schooling in
Knowsley programme.

Knowsley renewable and low carbon energy options report
In April 2009, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council
commissioned Consultancy firm ARUP to undertake a study entitled
‘Knowsley Renewable and Low Carbon Energy Options’.
- The study was, in part, designed to inform the development of
the Local Development Framework.
- Within the scope of the report, the consultants were asked
to:
- Identify constraints within the borough that would limit the
potential to develop renewable/ low carbon resources
- Identify potential preferred locations for new renewable energy
facilities of different types
- Identify approximate land take
- Assess the impact of any options on the Carbon footprint of
Knowsley and NI 185 (Local authority CO2 emissions) / NI 186 (per
capita CO2emissions in the local authority area)
- Assess potential renewable technologies in terms of the major
planning considerations for each technology
- Evaluate the cost implications of different renewable energy
technologies
- Consider the potential for acceptable forms of renewable
production on and for the Knowsley Industrial Park (KIP)
- Review existing policies regarding onsite renewable energy
production and suggest potential planning policy responses needed
to stimulate renewable/ low carbon installations within the
borough
The options appraised included biomass, combined heat and power,
wind energy, solar thermal, photovoltaic and ground source heat
pumps.
